Bella, 20% - 80% of the Time

While talking/shopping with a friend yesterday, we hit upon the topic of clothing in our closets.  As I stood in line waiting to pay for my new “just gotta have it top”,  I started thinking about the many past “gotta have its” that sit in my closet unworn with  hang tags still attached.

Why and how did these be loved (at the time) purchases became invisible when I stared in my closet this morning and proclaimed “I have NOTHING to wear”?

I read somewhere, that most people wear 20% of their clothing 80% of the time.  How can this be?  When I purchased that great red DKNY dress, didn’t I have plans to EVER wear it? Those Black legging purchased in Rome are still waiting to roam… somewhere, …anywhere!  They are begging to be seen!  But instead of turning a sympathetic eye in their direction, Today as always, I reached for my “everyday” leggings.

Now, most of us that grew-up in the south (me, the south side of Chicago) know of “Sunday/good clothes”, those special outfits that you were only allowed to wear on Sundays (church only) and special occasions.   Now, as an adult, unknowingly I have filled my closet with “Sunday clothes”, outfits that are only wore on special occasions, that other 20% of my life.

Isn’t attire another form of self-expression?
So, do I only feel special 20% of the time?  Is it me ignoring the other 80% of my
clothing or is my clothing ignoring me because today/I am not special enough for them!

With that in mind, and a new commitment to make each day a special day, starting
tomorrow, October 4, 2010, I will set out to wear everything currently in my closet over
the next 365 days.   365 outfits in 365 days!

Here I will document this journey with photos and video.   You are invited
to check-in daily for my “outfit of the day” and read how it impact (if any) my day.

You have heard of  “The sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”,  this will be the sista with
the traveling closet.   Since, I am also the owner of BlackGirlTravel.com, some of these
fashion moments will take place in foreign lands with possible foreign results and maybe
even a few foreign insults. 

I also invite you to tell me about your “outfit for the day”, did it help land you a new job?
Did it make your Boyfriend, say,  OMG (in a good way).  I would love to hear your
stories and even tips on how to make my outfits even better.   A sista needs some help!

Well, I’m off to start organizing my closet, see you tomorrow!
